General Mobile Radio Service or GMRS radios are great for long range communication. These radios generally work until about 5 miles or more. The ranges vary on the model of radio you purchase. Large, open spaces will generally be the best GMRS radio range. In a city environment, the range can be greatly limited down to about two miles. Some of the higher end ranges would be better for city use which gets ranges up to about 26 miles, but again, the environment you are in will determine the range. Fully charged batteries will also help the range that these radios can utilize.
These programmable radios operate on 8 dedicated channels (15-22), but can also share the first 7 channels that are FRS and GMRS shared. However, using the first 7 channels can lower the radios range due to the high usage and amount of power being drawn from the channels’ universal usage. To use the dedicated channels, an FCC operator’s license needs to be purchased. Because of the exclusive use of these channels, they achieve greater ranges than the FRS radios, typically. Be sure to research the radios to make sure that you are getting the best GMRS radio for your needs.
